"Connect effort into pleasure!"

Einav Katan

pp. 87-92

The first chapter of "The Mental Emphasis of Gaga" follows the implication of the instruction to connect effort into pleasure. In order to draw out the implicit wisdom within its procedure, Katan explores the instruction from an experimental point of view of a dancer. The chapter deals with the instruction as a case study of supportive directions in the movement research. The chapter draws attention to the hermeneutical challenge of perception and suggests seeing mental directives in Gaga in the phenomenological light of "directing a mood" and "epoche." Exploring the practical implication of the instruction on the experience of dancers, Katan sets up the plan of inquiries for the following chapters.
